Absarokee

Named for the Apsáalooke (Crow) people, the original stewards of this land, Absarokee is a picturesque valley community below the Beartooth Mountain foothills. Spanning just 2 square miles, this little town on Montana Highway 78 between Red Lodge and Columbus is a favorite stop for travelers seeking outdoor adventures and scenic beauty.

Absarokee serves as a gateway to adventure, with opportunities to raft or fish the Stillwater and Yellowstone rivers, hike the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness or saddle up for horseback rides with Paintbrush Adventures.

Don’t miss the scenic drives that surround Absarokee. The Beartooth Front Scenic Drive cuts through town, while the Bridger Creek Backcountry Drive and Absarokee Scenic Loop offer miles of inspiring views, creating a perfect way to experience this Montana treasure.

Live Like a Local

Brave the Class III rapids on the Stillwater River between Absarokee and Columbus (don’t worry, you can go with a guide). Your trip will likely include “cliff jumping” from a popular rock wall near Columbus. Whitewater enthusiasts also enjoy kayaking the river from Nye down.

Trip Tip

Paintbrush Adventures and the famous Barron Ranch provide a taste of authentic cowboy life in a picturesque setting with gracious western hospitality. Prepare for an unforgettable experience at this fifth-generation working horse, sheep and cattle ranch that’s unlike any other dude ranch in Montana.

Events

Absarokee is home to the Montana BBQ Cookoff held every June. This event is a Kansas City-sanctioned BBQ event where approximately 20 competitors face off for the creation of the best BBQ dishes. Get your fill of ribs, brisket, pulled pork, craft beer and live music.
